Going through some older pic’s and I am reminded of how lucky I am, found this display rack sadly no pic’s in the shop with the two of us working. This project led to my favorite Christmas gift last year, deep in the stocking I found my wife and me as Lego min-figs. even in Lego form I am drinking coffee

Lego display rack, slats are popular and the back is ¼” ply. Covered it all with Minwax crimson stain, a water based stain which I believe it was discontinued, good stuff especially for a kid’s room.

My son collects Lego min-figs and he did not want them in the box with the rest of the normal Lego guys. This is what he says to me “you know I got these nice ones and I got some space on the walls and you are happy when your woodworking so! Can we make this happen?” notice how I’m happy when woodworking as if to say, dad I don’t care if I get the display rack as long as I’m doing something to make you happy. Half of my brain fells honored and the other half is afraid my son, will sale me a used car one day.

All in all this is a great project to make with a kid, the long pieces can be cut in any way to any length, the short pieces need to the same which I cut ahead of time to keep the ball rolling. The back was already in the shop in the small ply pile however, I would cut this before I started with a child on account of the dust. Bright colored water based stain dries fast as kids do not like or understand let’s wait a few hours before the next step.
He glued and I nailed one piece at a time than laid it on the back ply, put a brick on top to clamp it all down. Went inside to take a break which all kids love and gave the glue time to dry, wiped on the satin and on to everything else, wait back inside to figure out what min-figs where gunna make the wall-o-fame, also allowing the stain to dry. He is happy with it so I am happy with all.

Great idea and shelf; and lovely story, how old is your boy?

Great project to spend quality time with son. I’m sure he will never forget it and proud to have helped Dad.

Have your say...
