My neighbor a few houses down decided to clear out his forest of a back yard and there was a line of skinny cedar trees down one fence. I asked if he had plans for them and he said everything was dumpster bound. So I dragged several of them home. My porch was 80% finished and I didn’t like the small fire wood racks from HD so I decided to build one to hold enough for several fires. My only issue was my fire place sits on a platform that leaves little room for the amount I wanted. I would need something 2 tiered to hold the amount I wanted.
Never working with fresh timbers before (other then chopping up fallen trees) I had to build this in 2 sections. The lower half pictured above went ok but I soon realized I was making something incredibly heavy! I pre-drilled and sank 4” decking screws to hold this all together. I sharpened my axe and removed the edges along the tops of every vertical log.
It took 4 of us to bring it into the house and it fit exactly in the space! I have been using it for 2 years now and it is slowly getting a nice patina and surprisingly very little bark has come off.
Again sorry for the grainy pictures. I will take some more and post them soon.
I know it’s not some incredible polished thing but I like challenging myself to make what I cannot buy. I hope you like it too!

I favor the thrift and natural utility of it. Nicely done.
Have your say...
