I had a request for a birthday gift, for a woman who happens to be a geologist or geology major… Anyway, she wanted a display box to give her for her birthday to show off all different cool rocks she has found over the years in Oregon. Originally the designed box was much more basic, and as pieces started coming together, more and more ideas came to mind as well. Eventually, this is what had evolved. It’s always funny to see how every little adjustment or addition can be caused by a few mistakes and it turns out to only add so much more than you originally planned for :)

The entire box is made of brazilian tigerwood, the glass was etched by hand, and the Oregon backstop doubles as an artistic touch.

The dividers turned out to be one of the few parts that played out exactly as planned. They are all interchangeable to customize even more to fit bigger rocks she may have.

Comments and critiques and other ideas are appreciated!

Thanks for looking :)

Interesting project. I like the feet and the proportions. I would have 45ed the outer side corners to emphasis the grain; and rounded the top edges of the dividers to be easier on fingers. I think I would have used a chain inside as a stop for the top. The Oregon shape is interesting, but it seems distracting. What would happen if the state shape were etched lightly in the glass? I don’t mean to pick at your project, you have done a fine job. The finish looks great and the wood is beautiful. The over all design is utilitarian and well laid out. The feet are a nice design element. I offer the comments as suggestions for consideration on future projects, and only because you asked for ideas. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Thank you, both of you guys.

No no that’s all good I appreciate those suggestions and concerns too! I really like that idea of the Oregon in the glass, that would be a nice touch. And you’re definitely right about rounding the dividers, I didn’t even think of that! And for 45ing the edges, these pictures didn’t quite do it justice. I did, but lemme grab a different photo to show.

The Oregon backstop was actually something that was requested, so I tried to incorporate it in a way that didn’t take too much away from the overall design of the box :) but I’ll remember that for next time!

Beautiful box! I live in Oregon, so I also enjoy it from that point of view. I’m sure the young lady will love it for her birthday gift!
