My third Chessboard

Inspired by an episode of Woodworks, I used David Marks technique to create the light and dark squares (quilted maple and jatoba) and then put my own personality into the decorative elements. The corner ‘watchtowers’ are mahogany I treated with potassium dichromate to darken the wood.

My first two boards were created as gifts for my two brother-in-laws.

I like the “personality” you added with the watchtowers and the wrapping around the board. Great choice of woods….

Very nice chess board. Take a look at the table that I made for my son.

Is yours solid wood on the chess board squares. Mine are veneer glued on 3/4” Plywood.

Nice… three boards! If only I my wife would let me teach her how to play… I’ll just have to resort to making one for my daughter when she’s old enough.

Beautiful work Daniel. I like the way you customized the edges and corners also. Thanks for sharing! Look forward to seeing more.

aND I DIDNT LOOK AT IT BECAUSE I WAS THINKING IF YOU’VE SEEN ONE CHECKERBOARD YOU’VE SEEN THEM ALL…. I WAS WRONG

This is a beautiful board… I’m really impressed.

Nice job! It is interesting to see the maple and other wood grains running different directions. I am with Karson, is it veneer or solid wood?

You all are too kind—but very encouraging none the less.

The squares are made up of veneers I cut myself on the bandsaw and then glued to a plywood substrate. I couldn’t bring myself to use more of my precious maple than I had to so a thick veneer made sense.

My daughter is taking a course on chess right now, so hopefully I’ll have an opponent soon.
