I found myself with the always present uncontrollable urge to build something, but my table saw is out of commission. So, I bought a dowel and made a lamp for sister-in-law to give to her boyfriend for his birthday. I used a 7/8” dowel (out of 1”) and a scrap of maple for the base. I routed a channel in the dowel by screwing it to a 2X4, then cut the screw holes off with my miter box. I painted the top and left the maple for contrast (it would be a crime to paint a piece of maple anyway). I ran the wire down through the dowel and base. Overall, I think it turned out pretty good. Now I just need to make and sell 10 more of these so I can buy a table saw.

That’s a really cool project. What light set did you use?

I really like the idea. You did a great job on it. Maybe a new table saw IS in your future.

Thanks guys. The light set is just a simple strip i buy from china on ebay for about a $1.50 each. You can get various lengths and colors. The downside is that they need at least 9 volt power, so i was unable to wire it up to a usb connection, as it is a desk lamp. Oh well. These are the lights I’ve used in all my projects.

Great idea! My wife brought home a 12” LED strip light kit last week handed it to me and said “I thought you might like this” ( ? she out does herself sometimes) I had no idea what to do with it and now I do :) Thanks for posting …......

Cool desk lamp! Like the minimalist look and the contrasting wood colors. Great job!
Have your say...
