Project Information
I found a craigslist ad a while ago of who was offering a bunch of 8/4 walnut cut offs. They sat in the basement for a while until I had the idea to do a "Modern Federal Farmhouse" style desk. I figured if most of the wood was free, might as well have some fun and experiment a bit.
The top is all of the walnut, jointed together. As a math nerd, I've always been fascinated by the Fibonacci Series, so made the top to the golden ratio, and then inlayed the Fibonacci squares into the top. This along with the "roping" (instead of striping, because its way too thick) is my ode to the Federal style. The bottom of the desk is spalted maple. I actually traded a good deal of my free walnut to a local guy who makes boxes for the maple. The only real money I have into the desk is the Padauk keyboard tray. I thought the red gave a nice contrast.
