Has it really been 35 years since I made my first wooden box??? Damn I must be getting old. Still a proponent of growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional!!! :)

Do you remember your first woodworking project??? I do and I still have it. I was an avid stamp collector back in the day so I decided to decoupage stamps all over my box. Each stamp had meaning as the bicentennial was happening. the three space stamps were added because space exploration was still a new and novel thing and I loved looking at astronomy books. I added the Yellowstone stamp because that is one of my favorite places on the planet. Some of the others I added because they looked “cool” or were just pretty old… kind of like me now!!! :O

Now that I look at the box I realize I needed to do a bit more sanding mainly because I see pencil marks and stain drippings on the inside. Oh well… not bad for an 11 year old kid!!!

Those stamps are a bit special too

Like most late woodworking bloomers, I started out building bookcases…very very very plain bookcases. That is much nicer.

Nice box. My first project also was a box for collecting coins. I still have it under the bed. Hinge is loose, wooden handle is gone leaving only the nail holes. Even router practice done on the lid years later. Built in 1970! My next project was a gun rack for my B.B. gun. Family moved while I was in service and It was left on the wall. Oh well. I did no woodwork til the 80’s when I built another box. It too is still together but in rough shape.

My favorite project was a hand painted ceramic chess set I made the same year. Earlier in the year I made a chess board to go with it. Somehow or another my Mom backed over the box containing the chess pieces years later when we were moving… sigh… ;(
