This project came about after seeing the milkman’s workbench on Christopher Schwartz blog. I am in the middle if making a box for combination plane and didn’t have a good way to clamp boards to plane faces. I didn’t have much time to spend on this with all of the rest of the stuff I have going on.
One of my friends has a huge amount of old shipping crate materials from a salvage job, so I grabbed a couple of 4×4’s and a 2 x and built this. I wish it could have looked more like a finely crafted piece, but it just ended up functional.
It is 30 in x 10.5 in. I was initially going to put the vise on the bench it’s clamped to, but this seemed like a better use. The last picture is just a few planes that I’ve cleaned up and tried out on it tonight.

Thank you. The bench dog is just a 3/8 in oak dowel. It’s held up so far, but I wonder for how long. Sometime in the near future, I will do some sort of wide vise for the front. I need something better to hold boards for dovetails than a 3 in jaw bench vise.

I don’t have room for a big WW bench. This looks like a great idea to clamp on my existing built in bench.

On cold days you could bring that into the house. Nice idea.

I don’t think the bench would be a problem inside, but the piles of shavings coming off of it may cause some contention.
