So when you go the flea market route, you find some cool stuff once in a while—such as this. To say the old slats were a weather-beaten mess is an understatement. My brother came with a request to “fix it up.” So the build for outdoors mind kicked in. The slats are 1” thick plain-sawn white oak. The finish is 7 coats of high gloss Epifanes marine varnish. This is awesome stuff. There is no stain—the amber is all from the Epifanes. Stainless steel hardware. The wrought iron was a little rusty and had some areas where pain had been slopped on in the past. Went to a local metal shop for sandblasting and powder coating. Now…. will he actually put it outside?

Nice job on the bench rebuild. I am just finishing up 2 small, children size benches. Thanks for the tip on the marine varnish.

It looks brand new, fresh from the factory. Great wood and metal combo and awesome finish. Great restoration work!
