The West Virginia House of Delegates elected a new Speaker of the House on June 18th. ( I was asked to turn a new gavel for him. They spec’d ‘solid walnut’ no other woods like I have used in some gavels in the past. It is a large gavel, the handle is 12” and the head is over 3” in diameter. I drilled into the handle at the head end about 3” and epoxied a 5/16” carbon-fiber rod to reinforce the head as these get banged down pretty hard sometimes and handles have broken at the heads. The handle is epoxied into head about 1.5”. Several coats of hand rubbed lacquer for the finish. I burned rings into handle and head with stainless wire for just a little extra character. Walnut was harvested here in West Virginia. They have a pounding/sounding block built into the Speaker’s podium but I will make a base for it in the near future. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful gavel Dr. Byte, Now if you could only get them to use it on their foreheads ! Then if you are successful in getting them to do that, then I’ll make a pair and present them to the president of the Florida Senate and speaker of the Florida House, if I tell tell them how West Virginia legislators use theirs on their foreheads, our brilliant legislators will of course have to “one-up” their West Virginia compatriots, by using theirs on their own foreheads and the legislators present to vote as well…heavens knows maybe we could get some rational legislation passed ?//

Another great project Dennis, as usual.
You’re getting the hang of making gavels. Talk to you soon.
