This is just a simple bowl nothing fancy about it.
This started out as a bowl about 6” deep. There were some cracks high on the side. As I got it thinner a piece broke off. I turned the height down and another piece broke of. I kept turning the side down till it stopped splitting. Made a respectable shallow bowl.
Bowl made of cedar about 10” x 3”. My wife doesn’t like to finish cedar so not finished.

Good job, I bet the shop smelled good after turning that one.

Dave she won’t finish anything I make from cedar. Says she like the smell to good to cover it up.
I have one of those storage containers under my lathe to catch shavings. It is about half full and is smelling really good.

I don’t like to finish cedar either – just give it a refresh with 220 or 320 whenever it’s thought about. Or, let it go.
As for the reduction? any turning project dictates its own size; turning down is what we do.

I see your wife’s point. Remembering when we were kids on vacation, my brother and I would always run to the cedar box section in souvenir stores to smell the wood.

Gene I agree with you. That piece of cedar didn’t want to be a 6” deep bowl it wanted to be 3”. Haa Haa. I always say the wood will do as it wants not always as you want.
