Previously I had just a 3×1 maple board with some hooks on it. Not near enough functionality for all that wall space. So this winter I got to making a project inspired by some projects seen here at LJ but completely of my own design.

Full details of the build are here (also a ton more pictures).

My biggest mistake was not flattening the solid maple panels on the side (as detailed in my write up) it wasn’t a big twist but it was enough to annoy me in the end. Secondly I used solid wood for the side pieces and plywood for the shelves and put a solid wood face frame onto the plywood. As the piece dried out inside the house the side panels shrank and, of course, the plywood cross members did not. The end result is that the solid wood face framing across the front of the plywood is now about 1/16” proud of the side panels. Oh well thankfully it hasn’t racked itself apart yet.

Very nice! The dimensions of what I build depends mostly on whatever the heck I can find in the PILES of stuff I have…

Have your say...
