Nutcracker Chess Set

The second edition of this difficult set. I really didn’t care for the way the first one came out and got the chance for a do-over recently.

This version is much stronger and has about 75 less pieces in the ‘pieces’. I changed the queen to better reflect the story and may make a 1” nutcracker for her to hold in her hands. The set plays well. The board has 2.5” squares and probable could have used 2.75 or 3” squares.

I prefer to carve when I make these things…this set has carving, turning, manufacturing, production, drawing, I really don’t like to make it, but it looks VERY cool in person!

The board is in the middle of finishing…
The pieces (except for the ballerina queen) are all functioning, albeit ornamental, nutcrackers.

Very nice set. I like that you took the time to make them functioning. All your boards are exceptional.

Jim this set is a cracker.
The chance to do another set is great.

Hi Jim,

I really like this Chess Set you have definitely mastered making chess sets!! This would be a great set to play on at Christmas time, sitting in front of a fireplace!

How many hours would you say it takes you to make this full set?

I really have to say that this is a very nice chess set. It’s a wonderful eye catcher and conversation piece.

What a cool set Jim. Very nicely done…. and even with just photos, you can almost hear these guys march. But I gotta tell you…. that looks like a LOT of work!

-- I just got done cutting three boards and all four of them were too short. (true story)

Amazing, looks fantastic. Great set but I can see this took some serious time to make.
