Hi guys,
Been a fan of this site for awhile and thought I might finally post something and get some constructive criticism.
This is a record cabinet to house my stereo components just finished a couple days ago – built from beech ply and hardwood salvaged from a futon a roommate left in my garage. Finish is 4 coats of Minwax wipe on poly. It’s was quite a learning experience for me, as this is the biggest challenge I’ve taken on so far, but I’m pretty happy with the results.
Looking forward to posting more projects soon.
Cheers,
Jason

Beautiful work! A very neat, tight fit for all of the components and a very elegant design, well done.

You should be happy. It looks great.
I can remember cabinets like that ( maybe not as nice) being in many of my family members homes. My uncles packed theirs with Led, Styx, Journey, while my grandmother preferred Traditional Italian performers. my mother had a Motown catalogue that I can only now appreciate.
I’m a huge fan of vinyl as a medium. This cabinet is a great looking piece of furniture.
I really like the way you’ve designed the lid/top to open.

How cool is this retro piece? Wow. Remember units like this in my Mother’s house, maybe going back to the 60’s. Love the sort of blonde finish, which matches perfectly.
Nice execution and a great conversation starter.

That turned out great!
We had one of those old console units in the 70s but ours was spanish colonial cherry with the little dark speckles. It also had folded gold velvet over the speakers, behind plastic wood grain lattice grills – very classy.
I like the way you’ve updated the lid for components, instead of it being a top access “well”. The base skirting really sells it, too.

I built one like that, except crappy, 43 years ago. Thanks for the memory. It looks great!

I would love to see some specs : speakers, turntable, amp, pre-amp. Vinyl sounds SO good. I can almost hear Lou Rawls singing “You’ll never find”.

Nice build and WELCOME LUMBERJOCKS… The Greatest Wood Working Site EVER!!!
Like Elduquie asked… tell us about the stereo. I’ve been into music since I was in 4th – 5th grade. Began drumming at 9. Had odd jobs as a youngster and bought my first stereo when I was in the 8th grade. Then in 1975 at the tender age of 18, I dropped $2,000. on a nice component setup. Still have and play the JBL speaks to this day. (My dad thought I lost my mind!)
With the speakers so close to the turntable, do you get any harmonic distortion?
BTW – congrats. New to the site and your post hits the “coveted Top 15!”
