Here is a vase in the process of being turned. The wood is spalted sugar maple. This piece had a lot of viening in it, but unfortunately it also had some very soft punky parts. The first photo shows the piece on the lathe with a matching unturned piece sitting next to it. Second photo shows the vase 75% complete. The third photo shows the first coat of danish oil. The vase was sanded all the way up to 400 grit before the finish went on. I will put 8-10 coats of danish oil sanding in between coats with 0000 steel wool. When I am happy with the finish I will apply minwax satin sealer and buff it with the beall system. Photos of the finished project will be posted when I am done.
