tail flash for outgoing Commander

I was asked if I could make a holder for a tail flash for an outgoing commander – as the flash they wanted to use was made in the far East and had the wrong markings I offered to make them the flash as well as the holder…

I used my Carvewright to carve the airfoil shape into a 1/2 inch piece of MDF and then primed and painted it. I then used my silhouette cameo to cut out the vinyl for the top flag and the numbers. Next I made the ACC symbol by printing onto decal paper and putting it on (this is the stuff used on models- soak in water and put it on)

Before anyone points it out- the 2 tail numbers are what were requested- this Commander had his name on 2 aircraft and requested both be put on (I’m charging by the letter so I don’t mind :) )

I then cut a groove and drilled some holes into a scrap hunk of walnut and gave it a quick finish. After it cures I’ll attach the engraved plate (which I did not make)

Thanks for looking, and as always your comments are appreciated.

Very nice looking tail flash! I’m sure he’ll enjoy it—and that bottle of beer!

As a guess, I’d say that’s the tail of a C-130, although the only ACC Herky Birds I know of are AC-130’s.

Whatever it is, it’s well done!

Nice job and write up. Creative solutions to the challenges you had.
