I am currently doing my internship in a little shop in Subang Jaya, Malaysia and for my first project there, my boss asked me to make a bench to be placed in front of the shop.

The frame is made out of Meranti, a type of local wood here in Malaysia and the “cushion” is made from scraps of local wood such as Resak, Nyatoh and again, Meranti. there are also some pine wood scraps thrown in the mix! i use a wax finish to preserve the natural color of each wood.

hope you guys like it!

Yes, I do like it! Great work on this and I love the innovative ‘upholstering’, a great way to use up some otherwise unusable scrap pieces. I predict great things to come in your woodworking career Dan.

thanks Mike! the upholstering came as an accident actually. hehe.. i made this chair without any plans and turns out i made the scrap top too thick. was thinking of resawing the top but the bandsaw at the shop is too weak so I decided to turn it into a cushion! already got a few orders for this bench. need to get to those once i have some free time at the shop!

Great looking bench, such creative design. Like the wood combo, the build and the finish.

I like it a lot. Though it look simple but you completely made it something more extraordinary.
