Growing up my parents often referred to one another by pet names they gave each other, mom being “Duck”and Dad being “Whale.” Coming into Christmas season I discovered band-saw boxes here on LJs and decided they would make great gifts for my parents. I really enjoyed making them and see many more band-saw boxes in my future. The Dozing Duck is mahogany and the Whale was cut from a chunk of 16/4 hard maple.

Did you find a plan for the duck or is it your creation. I like them both but the duck is great.

Hi meaded, i stumbled upon a plan for the duck box ggogling “bandsaw boxes”. Turns out the original plan is from a book on band saw boxes by Tom Crabb. I then picked up a used copy of the book since I envision making more boxes in the future..

Dave, both these boxes are great! I like how you incorporated the whale’s fin into a functional element as the drawer pull, as well as using a grain line in the maple as both your kerf line for your blade entry point and the mouth of the whale. Nicely planned!
