Here is a distressed finish shelf that I recently finished. My wife and I were shopping at a country decor store and found a shelf we really liked but we didn’t like the price ($150) I told her i could build it for significantly cheaper. So i took a picture of it and got the dimensions and then started building it. The 4th picture shows the original shelf at the store.
I was able to find enough scrap pine around the shop to build it. And we had the paint leftover from painting around the house. All i had to buy was the hardware to hang it and the dowel for the rods.
I originally built it without the dowel rods (3rd picture) but we decided it was a little plain looking so I added them.
For the distressed finish I did a coat of primer, then two coats of a dark brown paint, and then one coat of the lighter colored paint on top. Then my wife and I sanded through the top coat in spots to reveal the dark paint underneath

Amazing job! Way more beautiful than the pricey one in the store.
