This sculpted rocking chair is built from 2’’ Canadian Black Walnut and Cocobolo accented with Ebony plugs. This is a medium version ( 5’ 2’’ – 6’ 2’’ ) but with a headrest that has been raised by 1’’.
The leg/headrest design borrows more form the Maloof design with legs extending like horns and with a more stylized bottom curve to the headrest but still using a coopered headrest to keep the grain lines matched to the seat and arms.
I used the beautiful Cocobolo species, sliced into into 2mm thick grain matched pieces to be used as the front and back lamination to add a very unique contrast to the Walnut.
The seat has also been highlighted with Cocobolo surrounded by Canadian Black Walnut
Features
- Grain matched Cocobolo form fitting flexible back braces front and back
- coopered headrest
- exposed Maloof joinery
- hand carved seat, arms, and joints
- the most comfortable wood rocking chair you’ll ever sit in!
One more unique aspect of this chair is a book matched center wedge the flairs towards the back braces with the 3 center grain matched to the piece and the 2 outside braces grain matched to the rest of the seat.
Have a look at the build process on my blog - Day 1&2
I made a time lapse video of my self carving the seat and rocker leg joints, check it out!

Thanks as always for having a look (-:

Stunning Paul, just stunning. That book matched seat is too nice for me to plant my backside on.

I’m a sucker for cocobolo, but this chair is fantastic. I love it and looking forward to seeing some of your other stuff.

Hi Paul,
I was watching this on your blog, love the laminated seat approach, may try something like that on a future rocker. As always, very well executed! Cocobolo is always a good choice.
