Project Information

This is a bunk bed I made from my 3 year old son. Has a dresser, bookshelf, and desk included on the sides of the lower bed. I also built a stand alone dresser for him. Built completely out of birch - 4/4, 6/4 and birch ply, with poplar for drawers. Has a painted navy, distressed finish. Couple coats of lacquer on top of the paint. All of the drawers are dovetailed with full extension slides.

Thanks for looking!

Nice job! With a little care your son's grandchildren will get to use this bed. Be sure to put your name, date built and who it was built for on the bed.

Very nice. These should be very convenient for your son for the next several years. Be careful…..several years passes by in just days. My 3 year old son just turned 16 yesterday. He had bunk beds too. Seems like just yesterday.

This is bloody awesome. Congratulations - very strong work. Goodness - desk, bookshelves, drawers, bunks, just the right amount of decorative detail, finished to live with boys-just great, man.

Wonderful looking bunk bed, drawers and desk. But with that grin and general all boy look, I have to ask, "How
high does he bounce when he jumps off the top bunk?" Thank you for sharing and I hope the two of you
get to share many hours in the shop.

I built this about 9 months ago, so the details are a bit hazy.

Wet sanded
Stained
Painted
Lightly sanded entire piece, heavier in spots to show wear
Lacquered - semi gloss

I used Walmart's paint first, it was called navy. But it turned more purple than navy, so I painted over it.

Then, I used Ace's Royal Paint. I can't remember the exact color (and I don't have the can anymore), but it was a very dark blue/navy. I think midnight was in the name. They actually mixed up the wrong color from what I asked for (I asked for a shade darker) and I didn't notice it until I was using it at home. But I liked it, so I stuck with it.

I sprayed the paint on with an airless paint sprayer.
I sprayed the lacquer on with an hvlp sprayer.
