I just finished this chess table for my grandson who is 13 and has a great interest in chess. The board itself has inlaid 2 ” squares of dark walnut & figured maple veneer glued onto a stable base. There is a 1/4” walnut veneer trim around the whole board. Being frugal, I milled some old well figured spruce to make the frame and used a walnut stain. The inside of the drawers have partitions for individual pieces and are finished with black flocking. The finish used was wipe on poly and then a wax application. My grandson will be picking it up on the coming weekend so we’ll see what he has to say.

Thanks for the comment Jim, I have to admit there were some “picky…sticky” moments in the laminating process. A good test of patience and I may have come out even in the process.
Thank you too MontanaBob as it was the vision of my Grandson being interested in something that would make him think far ahead that determined whether to pursue the project in the first place.
Well Nuttree, time will tell next weekend as he keeps asking for a picture to send to him and now that it’s finished I’m going to let him wait until the weekend. That might sound a little hard on him but he’s already challenged me to be his first opponent and I know one of these days he’s going to be victorious. Hopefully it will be on his first game with the new board.

Have your say...
