This project is based on this one, obviously modified for size. I also opted to use 2×2s instead of stair bannister legs.

Anyway, this was is my first real project. There were some hiccups along the way but overall I am pretty happy with the result. As I said in an earlier blog post about it, there are some places where the joints are not entirely square, but that’s what I get for using the cheapest pine I could fine at the hardware store! It was a very good practice project, though, and I picked up some good skills and some important lessons for my next project, whatever it may be.

When the assembly was done I sanded it down and then used some black acrylic paint. There’s another lesson learned; acrylic paint is awful and very tacky, even when it is supposedly dry. The “drawer’ on the front is actually just another board, put there for decoration.

It should serve its purpose well—a “landing strip” for when we come in the door and want to drop our keys, mail, and so on off.
