An historic plantation near by lost quite a few trees in a storm last year. In exchange for building them a garden bench for auction I got to keep a lot of the wood. Really beautiful cedar slabs!!

Jay, Do you think that this cedar is what is commonly known as Giant American Redwood??
I have recently purchased a house which has had a tree felled to allow for new boundaries and I have just had it slabbed.
It is drying now and is down to 12-14% moisture content.
Before dressing it looks very similar to your stuff and has the highly contrasting new and older growth colours.

Great looking benches. I love working with Eastern Red Cedar.

ronn, this is just eastern red cedar. The trees aren’t particularly large, this tree wasn’t much more than 35ft or so. The trunks are also prone to banching off fairly low and being really irregularly shaped…

monte, this is also the great smelling “aromatic” cedar, and will keep the moths away!

That’s some nice looking cedar, wish I could find colors like that around here.

Very nice job on the bench. I really like how you allowed the natural contours of the wood guide the final shape. Very well done.
