I`ve put this bowls up as a project to make the point that one can turn some pretty nice bowls from woods that many would dismiss without even trying.
The bowl in the forefront is made from a piece of an ornamental cedar we call cedar deodore or deodorus, something like that. The heart wood contrasts spectacularly with the sapwood and the knots have a really nice amber color to them, similar to the heartwood.
The two bowls in the back are from Yellow Cedar. Some here on Vancouver Island call it cypress.
Both these cedars have a nice fragrance when freshly cut. Yellow Cedar is nice to carve and is highly rot resistant.
