A customer saw this Yellowwod log and envisionaged a staircase for his home in Hanover in the Northern Cape. I was commissioned to design and build this amazing piece. I was allowed to use my creativity to make this happen, but I could only do so as to how the log dictated. This made the job so much more difficult, as this Yellowwood log had so many different angles. It was also a logistical nightmare as the log weighs approximately 2 tons and a lot of mathematical engineering went into the design of the stairs. The staircase itself is 2.5m wide by 2.6m high. The base of the log itself is 1.3m wide and tapers to 700m at the apex. The stairs are from Stinkwood and are fitted into the Yellowwood log. This staircase will be fitted onto the floor and then the house is going to be built around it.
My customer is over the moon!

Beautiful solid spiral staircase and treads. Once this is mounted on the house floor, are you going to get
to do the railing also? Hope that we will get to see the house also. I can see why the owner is happy
with this project. Thank you for sharing.

Johan,
You and the homeowner were destined to meet for this project is truely ‘visionary’.
This will be a beautiful feature in his home.
I marked this to be ‘Watched’ in anticipation of additional posts and pictures.

Boy, this is going to be one impressive spiral staircase! Is the owners daughter plan on getting married and having her picture taken on this magnificent set of stairs? You look like you know what you are doing so I wish good luck and happy creating/fabricating/erecting!

Impressive! Even though it was tough to figure out, I bet you had a blast making it.

The house is going to be built around your piece? It that’s not a boost to the ol’ ego then nothing is! :DD
Great looking staircase, and looks like a really fun project. Wish I would get commissions like that. Thanks for sharing!
