Menu Board

This marks the beginning of my plunge into woodworking. It’s always been a fascination of mine so when my wife said she wanted a way to display our weekly meal plan, i thought now was a great time to start my new hobby.

I started with 1×12 red oak for the main board and 1×3 of what i think is pine but might be birch.

Planed the oak down to 1/2” on a ridgid 13” planer.
Ran the pine through the router and then used a straight bit to dig out some of the back so it would sit on top of the oak but also stay flush with the back of the board. Im sure theres a name for that…
Then I cut the trim with a miter saw, sanded, sanded some more, dry-fit and corrected like the lumberjocks forum told me to, sanded even more…i think i stopped after 400grit, glued and used a pneumatic brad nailer to hold it all together. I used 3 coats of a really light stain & polyurethane combo. The wood was just soaking it up like a sponge. When it was finished drying i bought the sticky back letters and construction paper at walmart and presto!

I wouldn’t call myself a Lumber Jock just yet, but i did manage to make something useful that my wife loves and i kept all of my fingers in the process.

Comments and advise will be greatly appreciated.

Nice menu board, and a great project for your foray into woodworking.

-- Martin ....always count the number of fingers you have before, and after using the saw.
