Several months ago I purchased a 1951 Craftsman lathe listed on Craigslist for $100 which included a stand and a set of original carving tools. This was my first attempt to turn a cup. I cut some circles of scrap oak and popular and glued them up overnight. Last night I put them on the lathe and smoothed them out some with a rasp before using the gouges. As you can see I need a lot of practice to get that nice desired finish. One thing I see that I need to improve is to learn how to sharpen and hone the cutting edges.

There are numerous youtube videos that show how to sharpen the tools.
