Big boy dino bed

After the General Lee, I told myself I wouldn’t be making any more beds. Who was I kidding? When it was nearing time to move my boys into a room together (as #3 was on the way), I asked my younger son what kind of bed he would like to sleep in. I admit I tried to talk him into a police car bed (keeping with the Dukes of Hazzard theme), but alas, he wanted a dinosaur. A t-rex. This posed a bit of an issue as the t-rex was more of a vertical, upright standing dinosaur, and my kid sleeps horizontally. So, coming up with a design was going to be a bit tricky. I honestly just freehanded the design on a sheet of 3/4” plywood, cut it out & traced it to another piece. The front of the “Sammysaurus” is a pair of bookshelves, handy for keeping bedtime stories nearby.
Once again, the worst part of the project (if theres anything bad about making things in the garage) was paint. I didn’t learn my lesson the first time, and cheaped out on the plywood. This only lengthened the sanding/painting process. All said & done though, the boy is happy with his bed. I just can’t wait until they get older, and the two creations turn into a bunk bed. Yeee-HAW! ;)

This and the General Lee are fantastic. There should be no crying at bedtime in your house!

Hello Jeff, I have just come across your post of the Dinosaur bed and my family think it would be a great project to make for our little Grandson. I am not sure if it appropriate to ask, but do you have a template for the dinosaur? We are in Western Australia.
Thanks in advance for any advice you are happy to pass on.

Howdy PopnNanna. I wish I could be of more help, but to be honest I just freehanded the outline on a 4×8 sheet of plywood and once I was happy with the way it was looking, cut and traced it to the other sheet. It was indeed a fun project, and although he’s outgrown it and into a more traditional bed, he still talks about it now and again.
If I could suggest anything, it would be to just take your time. I didn’t get the finished design on the first (or second, or third) attempt. But that’s kind of the fun part; bringing an idea in your head to fruition. It may help to have some images of dinosaurs nearby for inspiration. And, try and talk the boy into one that already is horizontal, like a stegosaurus or something!
Best of luck, and enjoy!
