I made a carving mallet about 15 years ago and it has seen some abuse as it was not always used as a carving mallet thanks to my father and some students. I recently had to do a substatial amount of turning and was still in the turning mode when I thought about the beat up old mallet and how it would be nice to have a new one that I use only for carving and light chisel work much like the first one was supposed to be. So I turned this mallet from a solid block of walnut which I trimmed the corners off on the bandsaw pror to turning just to save time. The mallet is finished with some boiled linseed oil and a little wax.

This is a nice looking mallet. I have got to make one of these (when I get a lathe of course).
Thanks for the post.

That is one pretty mallet – sure would be a shame to mark it up hitting things with it. Nice job.

Great! I can’t wait until “EF Hutton”(ref: “When she speaks everyone listens.”) says I can but one. Great job, there can be real beauty in tools and you have created it here.
