This is a design from a book on traditional box making, called a Shaker Candle Box. I modified the design a bit, and I don’t have curved chisels for the finger pull so I just put a simple slot made with a bull nose router bit. The box does have quite a number of dadoes and rabbets, as shown in the second picture. I made all those with a table saw. I made quite a few mistakes with one of the end pieces and had to re-make it twice. I finished it with Antique Improver as that bottle is running low and looked like just enough to finish this project. It doesn’t do much initially to pine, but it will darken to a carmel color after about a year; it’s worthe the wait. It’s pictured with a ‘courtin candle’, used in Victorian era times to regulate how long a suitor could stay when he came calling on a lady.

That’s an interesting end treatment with the notch, something I must have to try. Some lovely wood, the knots are great and the rabbeted joints are pleasantly plain. Nice work.

I love the simplicity of this box! I also like making changes to suit your needs, tools, material, etc. I’ve got a son who has been asking for a box of some kind, and I’ve got some wood that I think would be perfect for this project.
VERY nice work!
