I built this rocking horse for my cousins new born son. The plans and idea were from Mark S. “The Wood Whisperer”. I tried many new things with this project with varied success. This was the first time i tried Shellac. On Mark’s video he sprays a cut down version of shellac, and then used a gel stain for some color in the mane. I bought a can of shellac and brushed it on….mistake number 1. It dries sooo fast i coudn’t keep it looking even, now i know why he sprayed it. Also i think it went on so thick becuase it wasn’t thinned down that when i used the gel stain it really had very little effect. I do love the results of it but from now i am going to try to spray it. The details were all burned into the horse with a wood burner. I really really like how this came out, especially the writing of his initials. Pretty soon were going to need a rocking horse group to go along with all the cutting board guys….LOL
