This was only the second time that I have made a pen of this design. I believe it called a “Polaris” style. I really like this pen for 2 primary reasons. First, it is nice to be able to make a pen with a single tube. Second, I REALLY like olive wood. This particular piece is from a handful of pen blanks that ordered from Israel. The color of figured olive is so beautiful. I don’t remember exactly what finish I used on this, but I am sure it is a friction polish/wax of some sort. Perhaps will make one of these for myself some day. This particular one now belongs to my oldest son’s girlfriend.

Great pen! I want to make some of these in the future – it’ll be interesting to see what woods I can get here in NZ. Where did you order it from in Israel?

Hi FlashG! I purchased about 6 of these on eBay about 3 years ago. If you search for “olive wood pen blanks” you will find several. Look for those that are highly figured for the best coloring. Good luck!

Great looking pen! Have you ever turned Russian Olive? Out west it is a nuisance tree that grows along river banks. I was going to harvest some to see the difference between the two. I know Russian Olive has dramatic grain formation as well. Here is a link to some blanks in the Russian Olive. Do they look anything like the olive wood fro Israel?
Have your say...
