Here’s another chair side table with a “secret” drawer. The drawer is a “sled” that pops out either either side with a tap on the opposing end. People seem to love this as a way of hiding everyday clutter like glasses, remotes, toothpicks, napkins, flossers, etc. This one is for a relative who wants a dark shiny finish, not my usual finish.

My mistakes: tapered a leg on two sides from one end then from the other, rendering the piece useless. Fell to the charms of “Minwax PolyShades” once again. Fortunately it was the back of the top. Found out “glossy” is probably not the best choice under any circumstances.

Learned: A better construction method, lowering the skirt height and tuning the drawer depth. General finishes come to the rescue again with the gel stains. Best “dark” finish I’ve ever had. Guess what? Minwax wipe on satin finish was great!

Nice proportions, and I like your “secret drawer”. If you use a gloss vinish and you don’t like it, just sand surface with very fine grit (400 and above) and recoat. I have used 4 to 5 coats of gloss, sanding between coats. For the finish use fine pumice and rubbing oil to get a low gloss finish or rottenstone for more shine.
