I made these cutting boards from what is know around here as Brown Maple. I found the boards for these on an online classified site where the owner had amassed several thousand board feet of local lumber in his basement and was retiring and not able to use it. He had a basement full of the stuff in various species, lengths and thicknesses. I was interested in making a workbench so I picked out about 20 of the 8/4 maple boards and got them home. The price was very good on this stuff at $2/BF. As I got to looking more closely at the boards in good light i realized they were mostly from the center of the trees and contained a lot of heartwood and defects. Getting a lot of good flat boards for my bench was going to be a challenge so I thought to try making some cutting boards from these. I alternated the center wood with the sapwood on these boards to come up with the effect you see here. I am giving these away as Christmas presents and plan to make a bunch more for next year’s gifts.

Nice use of the contrasts within the tree. I guess the workbench went to the chopping block then? :-)

Love the first board, the effect of the core heartwood is very unusual and lends a depth that’s surprising.
Good Stuff!!
