Santa's Sleigh

Every Christmas season my wife would tell me of her childhood wish to have a real Santa’s sleigh out on her lawn. This year, I cleared space in my shop and opened the LJ project list under ‘Christmas’ – hoping to find a sleigh I could copy. The best one I found was a true work of art by ‘Brit’ (whose real name is Andy, I think). When I showed Brit’s work to my wife, she nearly ‘flipped’. It was perfect, but far beyond our talent level. With Brit’s advice as to the rough proportions, we sketched it out on a piece of cardboard and transferred the pattern onto 2 pieces of 3/8” plywood. I used shop offcuts for the ski runners and 2×2” stretchers. Val painted and decorated the sled after the construction was completed. Since putting it out on the lawn, we’ve already had 2 neighbors asking if I could make them a copy. Thanks again Brit! Your design made my wife a happy kid again!

That looks great John. It is always worth a bit of effort to keep the wife happy in my experience. Well done.

John
Can you share the plans with Santa? Need one similar for photo shoots.

If I had plans for the sleigh I would be only too happy to share. Unfortunately, I just made one for the wife and then a neighbor who wanted one too. I do have a cardboard tracing of the side of the sled I could probably send you providing you’d be willing to pay for the postage, but that’s about the best I could do. Let me know.

Johnzo – I don’t suppose you could share what and how you made the runners out of? I have to make a sleigh and love the design you and Brit have used.

I made the runners out of some old oak I had laying around, but I would use just about anything. The important thing is to make sure the curved tips don’t break off – since the wood grain direction there isn’t in your favor.
