So this box started as a jewelry box for my daughter. It loosely follows a woodsmith plan. I changed a few things along the way, and after applying the finish decided it was only good enough to be called “practice”. I attempted to used a little dye to pop the grain, and I guess it worked a little, but in doing so, I uncovered multiple blemishes in the maple that were not visible prior to applying finish. I’m a little dissapointed, but my daughter thinks it’s great…..she already took colored pencils to the bottom and underside of the lid (parts that remained unfinished) and it now houses all her colored pencils and 2 braclets…...anyway, gonna give it another shot, though this time I’m going to go with a more basic design and use some found wood I came across a year or so ago…..
Thanks for lookin’,

I like the simplicity of the design with the stripes of the lid. It’s a good lookin box.

Nice looking box for your first. I wouldn’t call it a practice box though.

I’m thinking of making the same box, I got the plans and I’m ready to start once my bench is clear of other projects. The words getting out that woodworking is my hobby.
The blemishes, so called, are all part of the project. The builder will see everyone, but the person recieving the finished item looks at it as if it was the most wonderful thing that ever happened. You made this with your own hands. You turned a tree into something that will last until the end of time. I hope you signed it because someday your great great grandchild will be saying to there children that your great great great grandfather made this himself. Than, they will run there fingers over your signature.
