Wrap Around Tree Bench

Built this bench to add some seating to our backyard. I built it out of cedar from the May 2009 issue of Wood magazine, but customized it to fit around my tree. It sits right next to my kid’s playset that I built for him, so now we have a place to sit and watch him.

I used Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss for a finish. I found this varnish from a Fine Woodworker’s article. It’s supposed to be the best outdoor finish. Followed the instructions and sprayed seven coats on. Allowing 24 hours to dry between coats, it took over a week to finish! That’s a long time to not make any dust in the shop. But, I think it’s worth it. It feels like a piece of furniture, and dirt just wipes right off. The tree this is around is a mulberry tree, so I didn’t want the mulberries staining the bench by using a traditional exterior stain.

This was my first time using Epifanes, and I’ll be sure to let everyone know how it holds up over time.

Nice, very nice. Been looking to do something similar in my yard. I will have to look for the plans.

May of ‘09 issue of wood magazine. I lengthened two sides of it to fit my tree, other than that, I built it straight from the plans.
