This stick is for my wife when she is walking the dog to fend off any would be attackers.
I was inspired by fellow lumberjock ‘Knottysticks’ project ‘Diamond willow hiker’. No Diamond willow around here so I just grabbed a pruning from the garden. Its Manuka also known as Tea Tree which dries quite hard and light and is possibly ideal for this purpose but to be honest I did not really look into too much. There was no real plan, it just kind of progressed by itself. First time to do any carving – done freehand with a small gouge. The strap is part of an old leather couch and the dangly bits are paua / abalone shell. Compass is from a $2 store ‘cos it was the only one I could find.
I really enjoyed doing this because it just kind of flowed – and it turned out ok, or at least my wife says so (and I am not interested in hearing otherwise – well ok maybe a few constructive tips) and it gave me lots of ideas for the next one. So
Fence stain
Tung oil
Paua shell
Cheap compass

Great idea !! A stick to beat the wife. Oh wait, I mean…. anyways, nice stick. I like the way you describe that the project just flowed. Those are the best kind…. when it all comes natural. Never heard of Manuka and had to look it up. Great job on the stick.

That turned out well. The compass insert is a cool idea.
