This is my version of a timber frame bird house, its come to the end of a 2 week project that began with the idea of weather or not to compete in the contest. well i went forward and gathered the wood, which consists of red cedar, walnut, dogwood, pecan and antique southern heart pine. i milled all the wood which took three days, rounding over all the red cedar to give them a log look, all of the entry holes are walnut which i milled in a jig that made it safe and allowed it to be done a bit quicker, i cut the frame work which is all 1 5/8 framing, the trim around the front is walnut, as is also the cut outs of the grizzly bears and the carvings of the moose antler is walnut, its a two story lodge with a total of 24 rooms, and on the top floor there is a empty space of about 10 inches square that i turned into a time capsule, and i placed some items of interest into a zip lock baggie and secured it with duct tape for a far distant day when this house begins to decay and someone will find what is inside. T he front and the back of the lodge are the same..both have the moose antler carvings and both have a front deck the front is the only one with a lower deck with the spas, there is also a 2 1/4 inch hole in the very bottom that goes to an empty space in the bottom center , where i want to see if a squirrel will take up residence, the roof is decked with 1/2 plywood and then covered with tar paper , then covered with a metal roof that i painted red.this was a lot of work, at least 70 hours worth..and i loved every minute…the front of the lodge has a lower level with 2 water bowls that can be used as either a bird spa or for critters to drink from, as you can see the halibut are hanging in front as well and a walkway that is walnut also..thank you very much for looking…grizzman

SIDE NOTE: This bird house won 1st place in the lumber jocks bird house building contest, prize was 500.00 dollars, thank you everyone.

Hello Grizzman

A like it

I want to make one because my garden is full of birds and at this time all the birdhouses are used but they have a classical design
I want to make them a beautiful birdhouse with a lot of options

Thanks for sharing

I am checking in!!! Wow! Is this ever COOL (with a capitol COO)

You really outdid yourself here, Bob! right down to the water dishes and the carvings. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had a little mini-spa in there somewhere so they could get little wing massages!

The time capsule idea is awesome, too. So clever to do that. I think we all find as we get older that it is fun to go back and reminisce and see what things were like ‘back when.’

Just and outstanding effort and worth every single second of love and work you put into it. A big high five to you! I can hear the birds singing your praises already!

You could make our birds jealous, good thing they don’t have the internet to see how the other birds are living. Great job!!!

Wow Grizzman…. that is incredible! Almost wished I was a bird so I could stay at your place. Does a room come with free breakfast and I assume it does host TV cable and broadband… right?

My feathered cap is off to you, sir!

Oh yeah… to agree with rance… fabulous idea with the time capsule! An extra stroke of creative genius!

Five extra points to you if the time capsule is stashed away in an old wooden trunk up in the attic…. ha ha
