First dovetail box

My first attempt at a dovetail box. Red oak with green felt inside. Finished with Danish oil, shellac, and paste wax. Oh, and an ugly stay – next time I’ll take a different approach on the stays.

The big learning on this one: until my dovetails improve, I don’t necessarily have to toss the less than perfect result on the firewood pile. I did a fair bit of sawdust and glue filling on this and, while it’s definitely visible, the box is still sturdy and I think looks reasonably okay.

I bought the wood as 1/2” craft supply at the lumber shop and used a hand saw and shooting board to dimension the pieces – I’m happy with how this turned out. Hand-cut dovetailes: meh, but I’m getting practice!

Thanks Bob. I’ll be passing it along to my wife and I’ll let her decide what it’s for.

For your first hand cut dovetail box, it is super, Grego! As a man of multi-talents, we’ll be expecting more great works from you! Welcome to LJ!

Good looking box. I like the hand cut dovetails, adds a personal touch that you can be proud of. I don’t think any one has ever done perfect hand cut dovetails on the first try.

-- You will never build it unless you try. The second one always turns out better.
