I built this bed for my son last winter. The headboard is from Woodsmith magazine, forget which issue. I designed the base and the drawers and storage per his wishes. Didn’t know his mattres was going to be that thick though. It hides the headboard which I think is the best feature. The headboard is made frome 1 1/2” thick red oak and the panels are from part of the A1 oak plywood I scored last summer. The base is also from the plywood with red oak drawer fronts. Interior is built with plain old ordinary 2×4’s. Sorry, don’t have a pic of that. Had a pic of the headboard by itself but can’t find it. My son picked the stain for the panels and plywood while the oak has no stain. The whole things is finished with 4 coats of Minwax water based poly. He loves it so I guess I’m pleased too.

I guess I forgot to mention that the panels at the headboard end are not drawers. The panels are held in place with door catches so they can be removed to access the storage under the bed. This was done due to there being night stands on either side of the bed. There are 2 drawers in the middle and a deep drawer at the foot and a small shallow drawer on the footboard end.

Nice, we just got a new bedroom set and my wife wants me to make something like this too. Only it has to match the bedroom furniture. Matching finishes is always a huge PITA. One thing to add to my notes from looking at yours. I’ll have to leave dead space at the back so the night stands don’t interfere with the drawers.
Thanks for posting this.

Great job

-- Norman - I never never make a mistake, I just change the design.
