I got my new drill press a while a go and after lifting it on the bench i noticed it was very high and hard to operate at this hight.
After contemplating how to bring it to a good working hight like cutting down the bench and loosing two drawers in the process i decided to cut down the column by six inches and that did the trick. Looking at the result whith a cup of coffe in my hand i thought why not use up the six inch leftover of the column and put a offset into the column to increase the swing from 13” to 21” and called on my buddy the welder to see if he could weld this for me as i was not sure my original design made out of baltic birch ply would be strong enough.
So here is the result and i got my four more inches from the centre of the chuck to the column !
Now my table fits without cutting a slot for the column into the back.

Very ingenious. Have you checked it for perpendicularity after the addition?

Good thinking. what an excellent way to get a deeper throat out of a stand tool.

I have been rolling the same idea around in my head for a while now. I have a large floor standing drill press and would love to increase the swing, but I hesitate because I want to be sure it won’t throw off the accuracy.

But, is the head still square to the column?
