Here is a pic of my homemade checkerboard, it’s made out of mahogany & white ash with an overall size of 15 1/2×15 1/2 and each square is 1 3/4×1 3/4. The checkers are 1 1/2 with the opposite wood color used as a 1/4 plug. I used General Finishes PolyAcrylic Water-Based Satin finish with 400 grit sandpaper in between coats.

Daryl, Welcome to LumberJocks. Nice looking game board, I like the idea of using the opposite color to plug the pieces.

Thanks! I basically had to do something after using the hole saw to cut them which left the 1/4 inch hole.

Thanks nitewalker41, I really appreciate that. I’m just getting started into woodworking so that means a lot.

Great looking checkerboard! I may (will) borrow your idea and build one for our grandchildren to play on. How do you “King” a player? That is a question I have often thought about.

Looks great. Did you use the FineWoodworking plan/method from a couple months ago? Looks very similar but has different dimensions. I’m following that plan at the moment and found it to be fairly easy to follow. Tedious to execute as veneer is never fun for me. Mine will look nearly identical with 2” square veneered strips (lots of taping). Thinking of putting a drawer in it as well for the pieces, but haven’t got that far.

Hey Jeff,
Thanks. I actually used a 50+ year old solid marble checkerboard (family heirloom) as my template to make this one. Let me know if you have anymore questions or need some advice on anything.
