This is my current project that I just finished last night.
It is a long stemmed rose carved out of basswood.
It was carved to scale and has all the veined and thorns carved in as well. The rose and septal petals are carved from one piece of wood and the stem and leaves are carved separately from another piece of basswood.
The petals and leaves are so thin that you can see light through them when they are held up to the light.
I have about 30 – 40 hours into it total including painting.
The rose itself was painted via airbrush in order to get all the way down in between the petals. It was my first time using an airbrush.
Thanks for looking.

Just an update.
This carving took both 3rd Place at the 2011 Minnesota State Fair and First Place Premium Blue Ribbon at the 2011 Washington County Fair in Minnesota.

Wow, that is incredible. Your detail is excellent, you can’t really tell it’s not real!

Looks like the real thing to me . I was wondering why some one would put a real rose picture on this sight and wow did I find out that it was a very well done carving . Love it . Is that what you mostly do is carve wood ? Take care. and thanks for sharing.

No dropping petals or leaves—your wife will now always have a rose that never fades or dies. It is simply gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.

thanks everyone
Yes Jeffery… I only carve wood when I get time to do so. Never enough hours in the day.

I like making rose peddles out of frosting that goes on a cake when I bake. I once made my wife a origami rose made of house tin foil that goes on a bake potato. I have made rose peddles of tissue paper and put it on a wood stick . I have never carved a rose out of wood though.
