I built 4 of these benches for a theater group that used them during a recent production. These benches are different than a traditional picnic table bench, as they will not tip. This was an important design consideration, as the actors had to stand on the front edge of the benches during the show.
The frames and legs are built from 2×4 lumber, and the seat is made from plywood. They are 5’9” long x 15” (seat top). The frame is 67” long and the cross members are 10” long. The legs (before cutting the angle in both ends) were 20” long. The frame was assembled with 3” screws and the top was secured to this frame. The legs are attached with 3/8” x 3 1/2” carriage bolts. The middle crossmember was offset from center so that the middle set of legs would be in the center of the bench. These were very easy to build. I built four of them for under $150!
If you need more information to build your own, let me know.
