Last year we acquired 2 cats. They like to sleep with us. There wasn’t room for them and us, so we bought a bigger mattress. Which meant we needed a bigger bed. I made the last bed a couple of years ago – in fact, it was the first thing I ever made and, frankly, it’s pretty bad. Solid but bad – bolted together, not smooth, no finish, a bit too big. Pretty bad.

I’ve been working on this, off and on, for the last 9 months or so. It took a month before I managed to work out how to make the “usual” interlocking dismantle mechanism work with a vertical headboard of, small we say, significant, size. It took another month or so to create and refine the headboard shape and finally decide on size and number of verticals and horizontals. I have about 10 other interesting headboard shapes, many of which I decided I couldn’t make. It took another month to get up the nerve to start making it.

The final design was…

If you’re interested in the alternatives, a pdf of the complete “working document” can be found here (111kB).

And this is the end result.

I’m pretty pleased with it, and, more importantly, so is SWMBO – it’s solid, it fits together (and comes apart), and I love the shape of the headboard. I took a bunch of time to set up the system for cutting the 26 mortises at the right depth and width, and it worked. I took the time to make a router table (read piece of plywood with a hole in it) to round the edges of the thin verticals. I took the time to pick the dark wood for the thin verticals, and light for the headboard surround. I also took the time to pick dark wood for some (but not all, why?!) of the bed base itself – if I had to do it again (please, not for another few years) I’d have stuck with light wood for there.

Ash, with pine baseboards. Linseed oil finish.

All comments, positive or negative, most welcome.

Good job. I like the smooth finish and the imaginative shape.

Great looking bed ! Our cats too sleep on the bed with us. Of course, room is not an issue for them, they just plop down on us and complain if we move too much…
