I have been wanting to replace a cheap (department store furniture) shelf that is not very sturdy and has been in our livingroom for awhile. When I got started, I decided to make 2 identical ones, I am glad I did. Again I have to match the rest of our furniture as best I could. They are made of 3/4” birch ply, some poplar, and some 2×4’s because I knew I would be staining these really dark.

Hi Gary nice work!!

How was it staining the poplar and birch ply, did it match pretty close, where you happy with the result. I have thought about doing this before but was worried about the finish.

Mike, the staining went pretty well and I used the same process I used when staining my dvd shelf. I think it matches pretty well. The finishing part of making something is not my favorite part. Thanks for checking my photos out.

8 1/2 years later, zero problems. In hind sight I should have made them a little deeper.
