I have to say that this is one project that I’m glad to be done with. It fought me tooth and nail from the word go. The main box is made from Birch, which is my first time using, other than in ply form. This is not a user friendly wood, at least it wasn’t for me that is. I made this for my wife’s birtdhday and it ended up being a couple of weeks late. Even with very sharp blades, bits, ZC inserts, etc. it still wanted to chip and break out. I even got chip out one time when I stared at it too hard, lol. Anyway, it’s done now and my wife was excited about it and that’s what matters.

The woods used are Birch, Purpleheart, Aromatic Cedar and Cherry. The Cherry dowels are inserted through some copper bushings I had. There was supposed to be a pull out insert for the dividers, but when I put it in for the last time, one of the pieces snapped and it was ruined. I had the dividers in and out numerous times while fitting them with no problems. It was as if the box was making sure it had the last word. Anyway, I will wait and see what my wife is going to do with it and then I will make some new ones accordingly.

If you are interested in making something similar, check out Andy's Art Box tutorial. Thanks again Andy! Any comments/critiques are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Yup , Birch can be a real [email protected] sometimes but you’ve GOT to love it once you tame it : )
Really nice gift box and your design is awesome : )

I really like your unique choice of the bushings and dowels in the corners, great idea !

I know what you mean when you say you had to “fight it tooth and nail”, I’ve had my share of those
as well. I’m glad you made it through with this one, you came out on top and definetly a winner!

The box turned out well. I know what you mean when you say it fought you tooth and nail. I have never been pushed over the edge by a project I was doing, but I could see the edge. Glad you finished it, I am sure your wife will enjoy it, now on to the next one.

outstanding craftsmanship. I really like the way that the cedar and the purpleheart work together. I might have to use those two in combination in the future.

”It fought me tooth and nail from the word go. ”

You won.

By a country mile.

It’s beautiful.
