This is our 26’x26’ point-to-point, Brigade symbol, affectionately known as the Death Star. It was originally built in ‘08 on my first go-round here in Afghanistan. One of our first projects when we got here this time was to renew the star. We re-sheeted the face with 3/4 ply, replaced the yellow trim with 1×8 clear pine, painted the entire thing, and replaced the “lost” symbols. It has became a local landmark and we think, can be seen from space lol.

That look’s great! Looks like you made in a professional shop. Thanks for your service. Spent a tour in support of OIF, and had to make our own stuff. Used a forklift as a bench to make a desk for the shop. Love your shop and chair. Stay safe and thanks again.

The compass rose and rope (yellow trim) symbolize the global directional support to forces anytime, anywhere under all conditions. The eagle’s head, adapted from the 101st Airborne Division’s shoulder sleeve insignia, alludes to the unit’s airborne status when it was founded. The playing card symbols and the Torii gate allude to the original symbols painted on the 101st soldiers’ helmets during World War II.

The eagle is Old Abe, an eagle from the civil war. He was wounded several times and that is where the Screaming Eagles name for the 101st came from. The torii is the symbol for the Rakkasans, 187th Infantry Regiment, which I was a member of. Passing under this kind of torii symbolizes passing through the gateway of honor. The card symbols are for the other brigades in the division.
